PhotoCraft for LinuxAppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak and tarball · x86_64 and ARM64

PhotoCraft is a native Linux photo editor written in Rust, with a GPU canvas on Vulkan and real PSD support. Every release ships an AppImage that runs without installing, packages for Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/openSUSE and Arch, a sandboxed Flatpak bundle and a plain tarball, for x86_64 and ARM64.

System requirements

What you need to run PhotoCraft on Linux

  • glibc 2.35 or later: Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Fedora 36+, RHEL 10 or openSUSE Tumbleweed.
  • x86_64 or ARM64 (aarch64). RISC-V has a tarball only, which needs glibc 2.39+.
  • An X11 or Wayland session and a Vulkan or EGL graphics driver from your distribution.
  • If a library is missing, the AppImage and tarball print the package to install and exit instead of crashing.

Install guide

How to install PhotoCraft on Linux

AppImage (any distribution)

  1. Make it executable and run it. No install needed. The first run adds a launcher and icon in ~/.local/share so your dock shows PhotoCraft.
    chmod +x photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage
    ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage
  2. Skip the launcher (optional). Set PHOTOCRAFT_NO_DESKTOP_INTEGRATION=1 before starting it if you do not want menu integration.

Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS

  1. Install the .deb. apt resolves the X11, Wayland and Vulkan libraries for you:
    sudo apt install ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.deb

Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE

  1. Install the .rpm. Use dnf on Fedora and RHEL, or zypper on openSUSE:
    sudo dnf install ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.rpm
    sudo zypper install ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.rpm

Arch Linux and derivatives

  1. Install the package. The release includes a pacman package:
    sudo pacman -U ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Flatpak (sandboxed)

  1. Install the bundle. It needs the freedesktop runtime from Flathub, which flatpak offers to install with it:
    flatpak install --user photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.flatpak
    flatpak run ai.storyteller.photocraft

Keep it current

Update, uninstall and verify

Update. Install the newer package the same way. The AppImage also works with AppImageUpdate and AppImageLauncher, which download only the changed blocks using the .zsync file.
Uninstall. Remove the deb, rpm, Arch package or Flatpak with the same package manager. For the AppImage, delete the file and its launcher:
rm ~/.local/share/applications/ai.storyteller.photocraft.desktop
find ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor -name 'ai.storyteller.photocraft*' -delete
Drag and drop on Wayland. Dropping files on the window does not work on Wayland yet. Use File › Open, paste with Ctrl+V, or start PhotoCraft under XWayland:
WAYLAND_DISPLAY= ./photocraft-0.17.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage
Check the download. Put SHA256SUMS.txt from the same release next to your file and run:
sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS.txt

FAQ

PhotoCraft for Linux FAQ

Which Linux distributions does PhotoCraft support?

Any distribution with glibc 2.35 or later, such as Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Fedora 36+, RHEL 10 and openSUSE Tumbleweed. The AppImage and tarball run on all of them; the deb, rpm and Arch packages integrate with their package managers.

AppImage, deb or Flatpak: which should I pick?

Take the deb or rpm if your distribution uses one, so dependencies and updates go through your package manager. Take the AppImage to try PhotoCraft without installing, or the Flatpak if you want it sandboxed.

Does PhotoCraft run on a Raspberry Pi or other ARM board?

There are aarch64 builds of every Linux format. The board needs a 64-bit OS with glibc 2.35+ and a working Vulkan or EGL driver.

Why can I not drag files onto PhotoCraft on Wayland?

The windowing library PhotoCraft uses has no Wayland drag and drop yet. Use File › Open or Ctrl+V, or run it under XWayland with WAYLAND_DISPLAY= set to empty.
