PhotoCraft GitHubThe storytold/photocraft repository, explained

PhotoCraft is developed in the open on GitHub. The repository at github.com/storytold/photocraft contains the complete Rust source code, the test suites, the documentation book and every release build. The repository was created on September 30, 2026 and passed 36,000 GitHub stars in its first ten days.

What is in the PhotoCraft GitHub repository

The repository is a Cargo workspace. Three applications sit in apps/: photocraft (the desktop editor), photocraft-cli (headless editing, batch actions and an MCP server for AI agents) and photocraft-web (the same editor compiled to WebAssembly, which powers our PhotoCraft online editor). The engine is split into 24 crates in crates/, including psd, codecs, color, raster, paint, vector, text, gpu and ui-egui.

Alongside the code you will find docs/ and a documentation book covering architecture, automation, file formats and security, a roadmap with an honest parity assessment against Photoshop, packaging for every platform and a Dockerfile to self-host the web version.

PhotoCraft GitHub releases

Each version is published on the PhotoCraft releases page with Windows MSI and portable builds, a signed macOS DMG, Linux AppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak and tarballs, a FreeBSD build, the macOS command-line tool, the static web build and SHA256SUMS.txt. The latest is PhotoCraft v0.6.0, released October 10, 2026 with 23 files. New versions have been shipping every few days. Our PhotoCraft download page lists every file with its size and a direct GitHub link.

Build PhotoCraft from the GitHub source

You need a recent stable Rust toolchain (the workspace uses the 2024 edition). Then:

git clone https://github.com/storytold/photocraft
cd photocraft
cargo run --release -p photocraft -- image.psd # the desktop app
cargo test --workspace # 1,700+ tests

Japanese UI fonts come from the optional storytold/craft-fonts repository; without it PhotoCraft falls back to your system’s CJK fonts. Read why the project chose Rust in our PhotoCraft Rust guide.

Contributing to PhotoCraft

New contributors, human or AI agent, are asked to start with AGENTS.md and the docs/ folder. Pull requests typically fix one issue each and come with tests; the release notes credit every contributor. Good first steps are reproducing an open issue, adding a PSD test case, or translating the interface.
